Street Talk Dutch- Taal van de straat

Dutch is the language spoken in the Netherlands and Northern Belguim. Holland is a state of Netherlands that speaks a dialect of Dutch.  The 2 main dialects of Dutch that are  taught in schools in the Netherlands, and the Dutch taught in schools in the Dutch speaking part of Belgian called Flemish/Vlaamse. Afrikaans from South Africa is also another dialect, albeit an older version of Dutch.

The closest language to modern Dutch is German. There are many similarities between the 2 languages. A Dutch person can usually understand a German person when they speak German, but Germans can’t understand a Dutch person speaking in Dutch.

English is also closely related to Dutch and there are many similarities between English and Dutch. It is said to be somewhere between Dutch and German. Beer is bier, here is hier, sleep is slaapen, Eat is eet and so on.

The ‘g’ in Dutch makes it very hard for any outsiders to pronounce the language properly and any beginner should be forgiven if they spit on someone while attempting this letter. Try pronouncing the words ‘graacht’- canal, or Groningen a city in the north without spitting.
